The Marian shrine of Our Lady of Btharram in the south of France was where theSociety of the Sacred Heart was originally founded. The conch of the apse has its own triumphal arch, supported by a pair of pilasters in the same style as those at the sanctuary entrance, and the conch itself has a stucco Dove of the Holy Spirit in a glory (ungilded, but lit by side windows). They were designed as a matching pair by Fontana, and are located over the sacristy doors and under a pair ofcantoria. Cleaning of the ceiling, not included in the original restoration programme, proved necessary because of the great contrast with the newly cleaned walls. It was originally built in order to house an icon of the Virgin and Child which was painted by Bicolo di Pietro around 1408. The facade is divided into two orders, consisting of false arcading with low architraves, a false loggia with arches above and pilasters and cornices of dark stone which contrast with the lighter marble.
